Admiration Barberry is a compact deer and rabbit resistant shrub with eye-catching multi-colored foliage. Its leaves are fiery crimson outlined with neon yellow, emerging in spring and persisting in color through fall. We struggle with deer pressure here at the nursery year-round, and this is one plant we never have to worry about. We also have it displayed at our entrance as, through the drought and deluges of our growing season, its vibrance never wavers. Admiration Barberry will add pops of color, texture and heartiness to your garden just as it does for ours.

Admiration Barberry Planting/Care Instructions

Before planting, have your soil tested to see what amendments are needed. Click this link to check your frost dates: Frost Dates. Check the light preferences for your plant and choose your location accordingly.

When you receive your Admiration Barberry, soak the root ball in water for 20 minutes upon arrival before planting or potting. Gently break up the root ball. This will help the roots of your Admiration Barberry to grow out into the soil. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of your plant. Fill in the hole tightly with soil to avoid any air pockets.

Add a bit of slow-release fertilizer to help new plants to grow quickly. Add the recommended amount per fertilizer instructions. Be sure to water your Admiration Barberry until it is established. In addition, pull weeds out when they appear. They take nutrients from the soil.

Additionally, certain plants may need staking. Whenever they become too heavy to stand on their own, add bamboo or fiberglass stakes for the plants to lean against or tie up for support.
Prune plants as needed to encourage growth. Always sterilize your pruners when pruning plants to prevent the spread of diseases.

If you have trouble keeping up with your pruners, check out our locally hand-made leather pruner holster here.

Lastly, enjoy your Admiration Barberry and your time in the garden!

Please Note: We currently do not ship plants to Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah or Washington. These states have strict shipping regulations against pests from other states. Extended transit time is also a factor in this decision. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Many factors influence which plants will thrive in a given location. Heat, cold, and elevation are just a few that can have a big impact. ** Pot size may vary as the size of plant could dictate the price.

We grow some plants, especially Japanese maples, in a greenhouse. For this reason, the colors may not be true to what they would be if they were grown in the sun. In this case, plants should be slowly acclimated to sunnier areas.
